There Is No Such Thing as Silence
Sit somewhere you consider quiet and stay still for ten minutes, and the room will fill up. A fridge compressor cycling. A boiler. Traffic two streets away that you had filed as nothing. Someone's floorboards. Then, later and more disconcertingly, your own body — a pulse in the ear, the faint high tone that most people discover they have always had and never listened to.
This is the ordinary experience of trying to find silence, and it is worth understanding before organising half an hour around it, because the thing people are usually looking for is not silence at all.
What you hear when there is nothing to hear
The extreme version of the experiment has been run in anechoic chambers — rooms lined to absorb essentially all reflected sound, with background levels far below anything found in nature. The consistent report from people who spend time in them is not that they hear nothing. It is that they hear themselves: blood, breath, joints, and a persistent high-pitched tone.
The composer John Cage described exactly this after visiting one, and concluded he had heard his nervous system and his circulation. The physiology is disputed — that high tone is more likely spontaneous emissions from the inner ear, or tinnitus that is normally masked and becomes audible when nothing covers it — but the observation stands regardless of the explanation. Remove external sound and the internal soundscape does not stay quiet; it gets promoted.
Cage drew the useful conclusion from this, which was that absolute silence is not available to a living listener, and that what we call silence is a particular kind of sound rather than its absence. His most famous piece follows directly: four and a half minutes in which the performer plays nothing, and the ambient sound of the room becomes the material. Audiences find it uncomfortable, which is the point — being made to attend to what you had been filtering is a genuinely strange experience.
Meanwhile, the availability of even relative quiet has become a measurable scarcity. The acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton spent years looking for places in the continental United States where you could sit for fifteen minutes without hearing a human-made sound, and found the count to be tiny and shrinking, largely because of aircraft. The threshold is worth sitting with: not an hour, not a day. Fifteen minutes.
The field that grew up around this — soundscape studies, largely traceable to the composer R. Murray Schafer — introduced a distinction that turns out to be more practically useful than the silence framing. Schafer separated environments that are acoustically hi-fi, where individual sounds can be heard distinctly against a low background, from lo-fi environments, where a wall of undifferentiated noise masks everything and nothing can be picked out. A forest is hi-fi. A city street is lo-fi. The problem with a lo-fi soundscape is not merely that it is loud; it is that it destroys the ability to hear distance and detail, which is most of what makes an environment legible.
Not silence, but the absence of information
Here is the observation that reorganises the whole thing, and it comes out of both the research and the ordinary experience of trying this.
Not all sound is equally intrusive at the same volume. Speech is by a wide margin the hardest thing to ignore, and this is well documented: background speech degrades concentration and recall substantially more than non-speech noise of the same loudness. The mechanism appears to be that language is parsed automatically. You cannot decline to process it. A conversation two tables away costs you far more than a much louder ventilation fan.
The same logic explains why a café can be a good place to work while an open-plan office with the same decibel reading is intolerable. The café's sound is dense enough that no individual conversation resolves into words. The office's is sparse enough that every one does.
So what people are pursuing when they say they want quiet is generally not a low decibel count. It is the absence of sound that carries information demanding attention — speech, notifications, anything addressed to them. Rain, wind, a fan, a distant road: these can be quite loud and remain restful, because there is nothing in them to attend to.
This is a considerably more achievable target than silence, and it changes what you would do about it. You are not trying to eliminate sound. You are trying to remove the sounds that mean something, and if necessary to mask the ones you cannot remove with something that means nothing.
It also explains why the anechoic chamber is unpleasant. With everything external stripped away, your own body becomes the only signal available, and a signal that cannot be escaped is exactly the wrong thing to be left with.
Thirty minutes of listening instead
Given all that, the practice is not to seek silence but to listen deliberately, which is a more interesting use of the time and does not require a national park.
Make the cacao, take it somewhere with no speech in earshot, and settle. Not silent; just no language. Outdoors is ideal, a room facing away from a street is fine, and a fan running is a legitimate tool rather than a compromise. If the quietest place available is not your kitchen, a single-serve packet and a flask solve the logistics.
Spend the first stretch simply cataloguing. Count distinct sound sources without judging them, working outward: the room, the building, outside the building, and as far as you can hear. Most people find between eight and fifteen where they expected two or three, and the far edge of what you can detect is usually much further away than assumed.
Then listen for the layers Schafer described. What is the continuous background you had stopped noticing? What are the individual signals that stand out against it? Is this a hi-fi space where you can hear distance, or a lo-fi one where everything sits at the same flat depth? That single question tends to change how a familiar place sounds permanently.
Drink slowly through the middle of it. Toward the end, stop directing attention outward and let it settle wherever it goes — including inward, to the pulse and the high tone, if that is where it lands. That part is normal, it is what Cage found, and it is the closest thing to silence available.
Thirty minutes is generous for this and deliberately so. The catalogue takes about ten, the layers take another ten, and the last ten is where the useful part happens — the stretch after you have run out of things to notice and are simply listening. Cutting it short removes exactly that portion.
