Ceremonial Cacao: What is it?

Pacha Mana Ceremonial-Grade Chuncho Cacao

From the heart of the Andes Mountains to your sacred cup

In the lush, high-altitude jungles downriver from Cusco, Peru, a rare and ancient cacao grows quietly beneath the mist. This is Chuncho, the golden heirloom of the Andes. Revered by the Inca, orginating with the Machiguenga Peoples, untouched by industrial hybrids, and lovingly stewarded by a family we know by name.

At Pacha Mana, this is the cacao we source. Grown in harmony with nature. Fermented and sun-dried with care. Prepared at origin to keep the process regenerative and the medicine strong. We don’t just make chocolate—we carry forward a lineage.

Why Chuncho?

Chuncho is one of the oldest known cacao varieties in the world. Its pods are small, its flavor nuanced, its energy unlike any other. It’s not mass-produced because it is not a particularly yielding varietal. It’s not diluted. It’s cacao in its original, powerful form—alive with spirit and story.

Unlike most global chocolate, which is often grown in exploitative systems across West Africa—our Chuncho is grown by smallholder families practicing agroforestry and receiving truly fair pay. Every batch we source helps preserve biodiversity, indigenous knowledge, and ethical supply chains rooted in reciprocity.

What Makes It Ceremonial?

In short, care and reciprocity. Along with so much more…

Ceremonial cacao is more than raw or organic chocolate. It’s cacao that’s prepared in a way that honors its ancestral use—as heart medicine, as a connector, as a gentle ally in self-reflection and transformation. Every step of the process is carefully considered to

We source whole-bean Chuncho, gently ferment it, slow-roast it to protect its bioactive compounds, and grind it into a pure paste—no added fat, no sugar, nothing stripped away. This is whole, unprocessed cacao that you can feel when you drink it.

Most people do not realize that you can feel uplifted in your mood and even replace coffee with chocolate prepared in a ceremonial grade process.

Pacha Mana: At the Heart of Sustainable Cacao Cultivation

Our story is rooted in the belief that ceremony starts at the farm. By choosing Pacha Mana, you’re not just indulging in a delicious, soul-nourishing, creamy treat; you’re supporting a sustainable future for the foothills of the Sacred Valley and the people most affected by the threat of climate change and deforestation.

Our direct partnership with farmers ensures that they receive fair compensation, empowering them to continue their ancestral work and protect the land that gives us the precious heirloom cacao.

The partnership with our family farmers ensures the spring water which feeds the cacao groves stays clean, the mountains and trees are not destroyed, the farming practices remain organic with minimum input and creates a product that you can taste and feel the difference.

How to Make It

Creating your cup is a ritual in itself. Here’s how we recommend preparing your ceremonial cacao:

  1. Warm 6–8 oz of spring water or plant milk (don’t boil—just heat to steamy).
  2. Add 1–2 tbsp of Chuncho cacao paste, or our Ground Cacao.
  3. Whisk or blend until smooth and velvety.
  4. Optional: sweeten with a bit of maple, add cinnamon or cayenne.
  5. Sip slowly, eyes closed, heart open.

Let this be a moment just for you—a return to gratitude.
