Farming Heirloom Cacao: Chuncho
Preserving Tradition: The Story of Chuncho Cacao from Southern Peru

High Elevation Cacao and its History
In the heart of southern Peru, nestled near Cusco, lies a treasure deeply rooted in tradition and history – Chuncho cacao. This native variety, belonging to the Alto Amazonas genetic group, carries with it the stories of centuries past, cultivated by indigenous communities like the Machiguenga since at least the 16th century.
The Family
At the heart of this story are the small family collectives who tend to these precious trees with unwavering dedication. To us, they aren’t just farmers; they’re family. Their commitment to preserving heirloom genetics and respecting the land and its culture is truly remarkable. They are a multi generational family farm and collective
Farming Chuncho Cacao
However, despite its exceptional qualities, Chuncho cacao faces an uphill battle. Its smaller, fewer pods yield around 30%-40% less volume compared to hybrid varieties, leading many farmers to replace Chuncho trees with more commercially viable options. This trend threatens not only the future of Chuncho cacao but also the biodiversity of the Peruvian forests.
But amidst these challenges, there’s hope. Chuncho is considered “native” which is the meaning of the word, and therefore grows easier than hybridized varieties that yield more and issues around disease and pests are less of a problem than commercial clone varieties.
By supporting the farmers and paying fair prices for Chuncho cacao, we can empower them to continue their vital work of preserving and seed saving the genetics. It’s not just about compensating for the lower yields; it’s about recognizing the true value of this exceptional product and the labor that goes into cultivating it..
Our Relationship and Stewardship
Chuncho cacao is more than just a commodity; it’s a symbol of our values. Its delicate aroma and fruity flavor, reminiscent of citrus fruits, remind us of the rich cultural heritage and biodiversity of the Andes mountains. Moreover, its resistance to diseases and productive qualities speak to the wisdom of generations past. If you can’t tell we are a bit biased and obsessed with this cacao we’ve come to steward, and we love sharing that passion and education with you!
Beyond its taste and aroma, Chuncho cacao represents a commitment to sustainable agriculture and land preservation. The farmers we work with are the guardians of the forests, where modern mass crop farming threatens to encroach deeper into the jungle. By supporting them, we’re not only protecting Chuncho cacao but also the land and communities it sustains.
As we savor each bite of Chuncho cacao, let us remember the stories it carries and the people behind its cultivation. Let us honor their dedication and vision for a future where tradition and sustainability go hand in hand. Together, we can ensure that Chuncho cacao continues to thrive for generations to come.
